WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE DIPLOMA

After my Diploma I helped a colleague start his own office. He was already working as an architect for a couple of years and he asked me if I wanted to join him to make some nice project for some some rich clients. We started working in his rooftop appartment because we didn't have an office yet. The first month we worked non stop, day and night, on weekends and holidays. It was a lot of work but we did some very good projects. I worked at the office till September 2010, after that I started working and I am still working as designer for guggenbichlerdesign... A small company primarily specializing in furniture design. When ever I can find the time I do some competitions to stay in shape. The results of two of them you can see below.

Exhibition in the Palethouse at the MQ Vienna

In the course of the 15 year anniversary of the Az W in December 2008 we were asked to exhibit and introduce our project Urban Space Recycling inside the Palethouse. After that the exhibition moved to Ljubljana and Athens.

A friend and I won the GAU:DI Competition Of Sustainable Architecture. Our project will be exhibited at the Biennale Of Architecture in Venice and than go on a exhibition tour through Europe!

FIRST AND SECOND PRICE STUDENT COMPETITION

Aviary was a project for the international competition Multi Comfort House announced by Saint-Gobain Isover a company that produces insulation materials. PLANNING TASK The planning site was free of choice. The task was to design a passivehouse for a family of two adolts and 2 children in consideration of the scenic and cultural environment. Feasibility was one of the major requirements.

Predetermined space allocation plan:

useable living area 120-150m²
storage rooms or basement 60-80m²parking area for 1 car and 4 bikes
terrace, court or something similar

Required u-values (coefficient of heat transmission) :

all outer units should have an u-value lower than 0.15 W/m²K
windows and doors an overall u-value of less than 0.8 W/m²K

DESIGN CONCEPT In our opinion the construction of a family home in a vast green meadow - however ecologically built - is not ecological in its inner most sense. For us it is more sustainable to create living spaces with high quality living standards inside the city. That is why we decided to look for urban building sites. But to densify the city we needed left over spaces. When taking this approach to the next level you will come past narrow gaps between buildings and firewalls. A firewall for us is nothing else but an unused virtical building site. Our focus was to create a family home in the city that wastes hardly any base area and therefore respects the public space. It even provides a roofed area for the tramway station. The form of the building can be understood as a caricature of the standard passive house box. By rotating the house away from the firewall we created space for terraces and a vertical garden. The strikingly vertical room arrangement follows from the narrowness of the construction site. The lowest level is accessible via stairs that run along the firewall. the living room with a ceiling that expands over three stories is oriented towards the south and has an additional terrace to the front of the building. The kitchen and dining area are in the second floor of the house. The moor quiet rooms like sleeping rooms and the bathroom are on the upper levels.

SUKIYAKI

DESIGN CONCEPT The project Sukiyaki in its basic concept refers to two cultural completely different but in its social interaction quite similar scenarios. First the traditional table of swizz farmers with a massive wooden tabletop and its engraved cups. Second the traditional Japanese table with chair cushions.Now the two concepts are thrown together to form the main design concept. The inlays can be arranged differently to create different scenarios. They can be used as dishes, as part of the tabletop or as chair cushions to sit at or directly on the table. The initial appearance of the divan can easily be changed. You can remove the cushions to sit on the floor in front of the table or on top of it. Through its modular system sukiyaki changes its dimension into a table for one, two or even eight people.

TEATIMER

DESIGN CONCEPT The TeaTimer is a combination of a teacup, a flask, a timer and an infuser. To make tea you have to disassemble the teatimer. By rotating the timer the aperture opens and hot water can be poured in. Now you close the aperture and fill in the tea put back the sieve and attach the cup. Like an hourglass the teatimer can be turned upside down. The timer can now be adjusted by turning the black hand wheel. The digits on the cup indicate 3, 5 or 10 minutes drip time. By turning the timer the aperture will open or close in the interior of the tea flask and so regulates the flow of the tea water.

RATTLESHAKE

DESIGN CONCEPT The cocktail shaker in the form of a rattle combines multiple functions for which otherwise different appliances would have been necessary. The lower half contains several beakers, each measuring 2 or 4 cl. The second half is used as spout stoppled with a mortar that contains a measuring spoon.

PLANNING TASK The topic was to plan a center for contemporary art with its focus on music and new media. Three event and concert halls had to be provided. A big music studio for at least 3000 persons, a smaller Studio for approximately 1000 persons and a multifunctional hall. In addition room for smaller cultural activities, rehearsal rooms, studios, archives and residents for the artists were required. The new building should work as a connection between the two adjoining districts and should revitalize the whole area. DESIGN CONCEPT The design goal was to create a place that develops the presentation and production of new music. The connection of the axes of the surrounding streets creates an accessible composition in which the visitors can move freely between the event halls. The spaces between the intercepting walks can be used as foyers and terraces for restaurants. A bridge leads to the multifunctional studio in the Herman Park and so creates a connection between the LinkingZone and the riverside.

SECOND PRICE STUDENT COMPETIION

PLANNING TASK Narrenturm was a project for the French cultural institute in Vienna. The students were given different areas in the park surrounding the institute. The topic of the competition was “follies lunacies in wood”. every student had an area of ten by ten meters on which we could design our “follies”. DESIGN CONCEPT Basic principle of my project is Michel Foucault’s theory on Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon. Narrenturm has a central tower where the visitor can sit and watch the other visitors come up the stairs. The observed themselves can partially see through the facade. It is a game of observing and being observed. People in the park can partially see into the tower but are also observed by the people who are inside. Beside taking part in competition I also was responsible for the exhibition planning.
